Duryodhana’s Final Condition, Lamentation, and the Night’s Report
ये वयं न गताः: स्वर्ग त्वां पुरस्कृत्य पार्थिवम् । “मुझको, कृतवर्माको तथा महारथी कृपाचार्यको भी धिक््कार है कि हम आप-जैसे महाराजको आगे करके स्वर्गलोकमें नहीं गये ।। ३४ $ ।। दातारं सर्वकामानां रक्षितारं प्रजाहितम्
ye vayaṁ na gatāḥ svargaṁ tvāṁ puraskṛtya pārthivam | dātāraṁ sarvakāmānāṁ rakṣitāraṁ prajāhitam ||
Sañjaya said: “Shame on us—that we did not attain heaven with you, O king, placed at our head. You were the giver of every desired boon and the protector devoted to the welfare of the people.”
संजय उवाच
The verse frames ideal kingship as generosity and protection of subjects, while also expressing the warrior-ethic notion that dying alongside a righteous leader can be seen as a path to heaven; it highlights remorse for failing in loyal duty.
Sañjaya reports a lament in which the speaker addresses a king, confessing shame that they did not go to heaven with him as their leader, praising him as a benefactor and guardian of the people.
