Sauptika Parva, Adhyaya 8 — Dhṛṣṭadyumna-vadha and the Camp’s Nocturnal Rout

apaśyac chayane suptam uttamaujasaṃ antike |

Sañjaya said: After slaying Dhṛṣṭadyumna and his attendants, Aśvatthāmā saw Uttamaujā lying asleep upon a bed in a nearby tent. The scene marks the moral collapse of the night-raid: the warrior is not met in open combat, but found defenseless in sleep, so that victory becomes slaughter rather than a dharmic duel.
