Sauptika Parva, Adhyaya 8 — Dhṛṣṭadyumna-vadha and the Camp’s Nocturnal Rout

tyaktvā dvārāṇi ca dvāḥ-sthās tathā gulmāni gaulmīkāḥ

Sañjaya said: Abandoning the gates and the gatekeepers, and likewise the military posts and their guards, the assailants pressed on—an image of night-raid chaos in which ordinary protections collapse and violence spreads without discernment. The verse underscores the ethical horror of nocturnal slaughter: when fear and fate drive men, even the boundaries meant to restrain harm are cast aside.
