Sañjaya said: “Alas! The Pāṇḍavas have wrought this slaughter of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. From this vast calamity and carnage, only we three have been left alive.”

The verse foregrounds the moral shock of war’s outcome: even when one side is ‘victorious,’ the result is a vast human catastrophe. Sañjaya’s lament highlights the ethical weight of mass killing and the bitter residue of survival—victory measured against devastation.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra the scale of destruction suffered by the Dhārtarāṣṭras at the hands of the Pāṇḍavas, emphasizing that after this immense carnage only three individuals remain alive on their side.
