Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: “The Brahmins were enraged when Draupadī was dragged and her garment was pulled. The women of the city, together with the women of the common people, grieve for her day and night. Because of that outrage, the Brahmins, burning with indignation, did not even perform their evening agnihotra rites in our houses.”

Educational Q&A

Public adharma—especially the humiliation of a woman in a royal court—pollutes the moral and ritual order. The Brahmins’ refusal to perform agnihotra signifies a withdrawal of religious sanction and a warning that unrighteous acts bring immediate social and spiritual consequences.

After Draupadī is dragged and her garment is pulled in the Kaurava court, the community reacts strongly: women mourn continuously, and Brahmins become so indignant that they do not carry out even the customary evening agnihotra in the royal houses, marking the gravity of the offense.
