Dhr̥tarāṣṭra uvāca: Dhaumyenaiva kathaṃ kṣatta Draupadī ca yaśasvinī | Śrotum icchāmy ahaṃ sarvaṃ teṣāṃ śaṃsa viceṣṭitam ||
Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: “O chamberlain, how are Dhaumya and the illustrious Draupadī faring? I wish to hear everything—tell me, in detail, of the actions and movements of them all.”
The verse highlights the ethical importance of attentive inquiry and truthful reporting in a royal court: a ruler seeks a clear account of others’ welfare and conduct, implying responsibility to know and respond to suffering and events rather than remain indifferent.
Dhṛtarāṣṭra addresses the kṣattā (court attendant) and asks how Dhaumya and the famed Draupadī are managing. He requests a detailed narration of the actions and movements of all concerned, setting up a report about their situation.
