vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca | sahadevaṃ me putraḥ sadāvekṣyo vane vasan | yathedaṃ vyasanaṃ prāpya nāyaṃ sīden mahāmatiḥ ||
“My son Sahadeva, living in the forest, must be looked after by you at all times, so that, having fallen into this calamity, that great-minded one may not sink into grief.”
The verse highlights dharma as responsible care: in times of misfortune and exile, one must actively protect and support dependents so that they do not collapse into despair; ethical duty includes safeguarding another’s mental steadiness as well as physical well-being.
Amid the consequences of a grave crisis leading to forest-dwelling, the speaker conveys an instruction that Sahadeva, while living in the forest, should be continually looked after, so that he does not succumb to sorrow despite the calamity.
