Adhyāya 52 (Sabhā-parva): Vidura Invites Yudhiṣṭhira to Hastināpura for the Dice Match
apaśyaṁ sarvavarṇānāṁ yudhiṣṭhira-niveśane |
Duryodhana said: “In Yudhiṣṭhira’s royal establishment, I saw no one of any social order who had not been fed and given drink, adorned with ornaments, and treated with honor.”
दुर्योधन उवाच
A dhārmic ruler is expected to practice impartial hospitality and public generosity—ensuring that all people, regardless of varṇa, are properly received, fed, and honored. Such visible righteousness becomes a measure of legitimate kingship.
During the description of Yudhiṣṭhira’s grand royal-sacrificial setting, Duryodhana remarks that everyone present appears well-fed, adorned, and respected. His observation functions both as praise of Yudhiṣṭhira’s magnificence and as a narrative seed for Duryodhana’s growing resentment.
