Jarāsandha–Bhīma Niyuddha-prastāvaḥ

Commencement of the Regulated Duel

viśrastaḥ kṣātram ojaś ca brāhmaṇyaṃ pratijānatha | evaṃ virāgavasanā bahirmālyānulepanāḥ | satyaṃ vadata ke yūyaṃ satyaṃ rājatsu śobhate ||

Vaiśampāyana said: “Your martial vigor appears to have slipped, yet you claim the status of brahmins. Wearing such oddly colored garments and outwardly adorned with garlands and sandal-paste without clear cause—who are you? Speak the truth. Among kings, truthfulness alone is what truly shines.”

Educational Q&A

The verse foregrounds satya (truthfulness) as a defining royal virtue: even in tense or suspicious circumstances, a king’s conduct is beautified by truth, and deception is implicitly censured.

In Jarāsandha’s setting, the visitors’ appearance and claimed identity seem inconsistent—martial bearing versus brahmin claim, unusual dress and adornment—prompting a demand to reveal who they are and to speak truthfully.
