Shloka 73

अध्याय ९ — कर्णस्य प्रहारः, योधयुग्मनियोजनम्, शैनेय-कैकेययोर्युद्धविन्यासः

दुर्मर्षणं हतं दृष्टवा वृषसेनं च संयुगे,विद्रुतान्‌ रथिनो दृष्टवा मन्ये शोचति पुत्रक: । दुर्मैषण और वृषसेन भी युद्धमें मारे गये, महारथी पाण्डवोंकी मार खाकर सेनामें भगदड़ मच गयी, सहायक नरेश युद्धसे विमुख हो पलायन करने लगे और रथियोंने पीठ दिखा दी। यह सब देखकर मेरा बेटा शोक कर रहा होगा; ऐसा मुझे मालूम हो रहा है

durmarṣaṇaṁ hataṁ dṛṣṭvā vṛṣasenaṁ ca saṁyuge | vidrutān rathino dṛṣṭvā manye śocati putrakaḥ ||

Vaiśaṃpāyana said: “Seeing Durmarṣaṇa slain and Vṛṣasena fallen in the battle, and seeing the chariot-warriors fleeing in disorder, I think my son is grieving. The rout of the supporting kings and the turning back of the fighters bespeak a collapse of resolve; such sights, born of war’s harsh moral cost, would pierce a father’s heart with sorrow.”
