अध्याय ९ — कर्णस्य प्रहारः, योधयुग्मनियोजनम्, शैनेय-कैकेययोर्युद्धविन्यासः

इति यस्य महाघोरं व्रतमासीन्महात्मन: । उसके नष्ट होनेमें और कोई कारण मुझे नहीं दिखायी देता है, जिस महामना वीरका यह भयंकर व्रत था कि “मैं जबतक अर्जुनको मार नहीं लूँगा, तबतक दूसरोंसे अपने पैर नहीं धुलाऊँगा'
Transliteration
iti yasya mahāghoraṁ vratam āsīn mahātmanaḥ |
Translation
Vaiśampāyana said: “Such was the exceedingly dreadful vow of that great-souled hero. I see no other cause for his ruin than this: he had bound himself by a terrible resolve—‘Until I slay Arjuna, I shall not have my feet washed by anyone else.’”
