toṣito bhagavān yena mahātmā vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ | kathaṃ vā tasya na jayo jāyate śatalocana ||
Sañjaya said: “O Śatalocana (hundred-eyed one), how could victory fail to arise for the man by whom the blessed Lord—the great-souled Vṛṣabhadhvaja—has been pleased?”
संजय उवाच
Victory is portrayed as inseparable from divine grace: if one has truly pleased Śiva (Vṛṣabhadhvaja) through devotion and worthy conduct, success naturally follows. The verse emphasizes ethical-spiritual causality behind worldly outcomes like triumph in battle.
Sañjaya, narrating events, addresses ‘Śatalocana’ and asserts that the person who has satisfied the great Lord Vṛṣabhadhvaja cannot be denied victory. It functions as a rhetorical assurance that divine approval decisively supports a combatant’s success.
