इस प्रकार सूर्य और इन्द्रमें विवाद होने लगा। वे दोनों देवश्रेष्ठ वहाँ एक-एक पक्षमें खड़े थे। भारत! देवताओं और असुरोंमें भी वहाँ दो पक्ष हो गये थे ।। समेतौ तौ महात्मानौ दृष्टवा कर्णधनंजयौ । अकम्पन्त त्रयो लोका: सहदेवर्षिचारणा:,महामना कर्ण और अर्जुनको युद्धके लिये एकत्र हुआ देख देवताओं, ऋषियों तथा चारणोंसहित तीनों लोकके प्राणी काँपने लगे
sañjaya uvāca | itthaṃ sūrya-indrayor vivādo 'bhavat | tau ubhau devaśreṣṭhau tatra pratyekaṃ pakṣe sthitau | bhārata! devānām asurāṇāṃ ca tatra dvau pakṣau babhūvatuḥ || sametau tau mahātmānau dṛṣṭvā karṇa-dhanañjayau | akampanta trayo lokāḥ saha devarṣi-cāraṇāḥ ||
Sañjaya said: Thus a dispute arose between Sūrya and Indra. Those two foremost of the gods stood there, each taking a side. O Bhārata, even among the gods and the asuras two opposing parties formed. Seeing the two great warriors—Karna and Dhanañjaya (Arjuna)—assembled for battle, the three worlds trembled, together with the divine seers and the Cāraṇas.
संजय उवाच

Sañjaya reports that Sūrya and Indra fall into dispute and stand on opposing sides; devas and asuras also split into factions. As Karna and Arjuna gather for their decisive battle, the three worlds tremble along with divine seers and celestial bards, underscoring the duel’s immense significance.
