Sañjaya said: Then once again a most dreadful battle arose between the Kurus and the Pāṇḍavas together with the Sṛñjayas. With arrows, swords, spears, lances, maces, and axes it took the lives of men, horses, and elephants, and the earth was thrown into turmoil.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the ethical gravity of renewed hostility: once war reignites, it becomes indiscriminate, consuming not only warriors but also animals and the wider world, symbolized by the earth itself being shaken. It implicitly warns that adharma-driven conflict multiplies suffering beyond intended targets.

Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the fighting has flared up again between the Kaurava forces and the Pāṇḍavas allied with the Sṛñjayas. The battlefield turns into a lethal melee of multiple weapons, causing heavy casualties among men, horses, and elephants.
