Cosmic Spectatorship and Vows

Sañjaya said: A dreadful, blood-filled river—bearing men toward the world beyond—seemed to flow, sweeping everyone along in its current. Those standing there saw that all of Ashvatthama’s chariot-warriors had been slain on the battlefield by arrows released from Arjuna’s bow; Ashvatthama himself also beheld their condition. At that moment, he too unleashed a terrifying ‘river’ that carried men toward death. In that tumultuous and brutal duel between Drona’s son and Partha, the warriors, casting aside all restraint and order, fought without bounds and ran in every direction—forward and back.

The verse highlights how war, when it becomes ‘amaryāda’ (without restraint), turns into a death-current that sweeps away all—suggesting an ethical warning that abandoning limits and right conduct in conflict accelerates collective ruin.
Sanjaya describes the fierce duel between Arjuna and Ashvatthama: Arjuna’s arrows have already slain Ashvatthama’s supporting chariot-warriors, Ashvatthama witnesses it, and the battlefield descends into panic and disorder as fighters scatter and fight without any sense of order or restraint.
