Śalya said: “O lord, I am fit to serve as Indra’s charioteer—worthy like Mātali. By vigilance and skill in application, and by my knowledge, learning, and even the arts of healing, I possess the qualities required for that office.”
शल्य उवाच
Competence in duty is grounded in apramāda (vigilant non-negligence) and prayoga (skilled execution), supported by broad learning—knowledge, disciplines, and even healing—so that service in a critical role becomes ethically reliable.
Śalya speaks assertively about his qualifications, comparing himself to Mātali, Indra’s famed charioteer, to claim that he is fully capable of charioteer-duty in the war context and should be regarded as expertly fit for that role.
