Karṇa’s Breach of Yudhiṣṭhira’s Battle-Line

Duryodhana said: “O Lord of the gods, acting under your command while I stood in the office of Prajāpati, I granted the Dānavas a great boon. Having obtained it, they have overstepped all bounds. O Maheśvara, master of past and future—apart from you there is no one capable of destroying them. For their death, you alone can stand as the opposing enemy.”
A boon granted without foresight can empower adharma; when limits (maryādā) are violated, restoration of cosmic order may require a higher authority. The verse underscores accountability for actions and the idea that ultimate correction lies with the supreme divine power (here, Śiva).
Duryodhana addresses Śiva, recalling that he once granted the Dānavas a powerful boon while holding the Prajāpati office under divine instruction. Now the boon-recipients have become lawless, and Duryodhana petitions Śiva, asserting that only Śiva can oppose and destroy them.
