Duryodhana said: “O lord of Madra, listen again to what I am about to tell you. O mighty one, I shall relate exactly how this occurred in ancient times during the war between the gods and the demons. Attend to it with a steady mind; you need not entertain any doubt or alternative interpretation about it.”

Educational Q&A

The verse foregrounds the authority of ancient precedent: Duryodhana urges attentive listening and discourages doubt, showing how speakers in the epic use revered past events to persuade and to frame present decisions in war.

Duryodhana addresses Śalya (king of Madra) and begins recounting an ancient episode from the devas–asuras conflict, setting up a larger mythic narrative (leading into the Tripura-related account) to influence the listener’s mindset.
