Sañjaya said: “Had you fulfilled the duties of a father and, having set your son firmly on the righteous path, conducted yourself in accordance with dharma, this calamity would not have overtaken you.”
संजय उवाच
Personal and political ruin is portrayed as the consequence of neglecting dharma: one must honor filial obligations and guide one’s offspring onto the righteous path; otherwise misfortune naturally follows.
Sañjaya delivers a moral rebuke to the addressed listener (contextually a ruler/elder), stating that the present संकट (vyasana) would not have arisen if he had acted righteously—performing proper duties and restraining/educating his son toward good conduct.
