Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how fear and attachment to life can override martial resolve: the speaker prioritizes self-preservation and withdraws, contrasting with the expected steadfastness of warriors in a dharma-yuddha.

Sañjaya reports a statement of retreat: hearing (kila) that Arjuna intends to kill him, the speaker offers a conventional blessing (“svasti”) to the assembled kings and declares he will go back home to save his life.
