Arjuna said: “May I fall into that grievous fate which is assigned to those who spit phlegm, or discharge feces or urine into water, if I do not slay Jayadratha tomorrow—may I not attain any blessed end.”

Educational Q&A

The verse underscores the moral weight of vows and the sanctity of water: defiling water is treated as a serious ethical breach, and Arjuna uses that shared norm to intensify his self-binding commitment to fulfill his duty.

After Abhimanyu’s death and Jayadratha’s role in blocking the Pandavas, Arjuna makes a fierce pledge to kill Jayadratha the next day; here he declares a self-curse—accepting a dreadful fate—if he fails to do so.
