आत्मानमेव गर्हैयं यदहं वै सुदुर्बलान् । युष्मानाज्ञाय निर्यातों भीरूनकृतनिश्चयान्,“मैं अपनी ही निन््दा करूँगा; क्योंकि आपलोगोंको अत्यन्त दुर्बल, डरपोक और सुदृढ़ निश्चयसे रहित जानकर भी मैं (अभिमन्युको आपलोगोंके भरोसे छोड़कर) अन्यत्र चला गया
ātmānam eva garhayiṃ yad ahaṃ vai sudurbalān | yuṣmān ājñāya niryāto bhīrūn akṛtaniścayān ||
Sañjaya said: “I will condemn myself alone, for though I knew you to be utterly weak—timid and lacking firm resolve—I still departed elsewhere, leaving Abhimanyu to rely upon you.”
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights moral accountability: knowing others are unfit for a duty yet entrusting them with it is a failure of judgment, for which one must accept personal blame.
Sañjaya reports a moment of remorse: the speaker condemns himself for leaving Abhimanyu dependent on companions he regarded as weak, fearful, and lacking resolve.
