Droṇa-parva 55
प्रत्यदृश्यत देवर्षिनरिदस्तस्य संनिधौ | पुत्रशोकसे पीड़ित हुए राजा सूंजय विलाप कर रहे हैं--यह सुनकर देवर्षि नारद उनके समीप दिखायी दिये ।। उवाच चैन दुःखार्त विलपन्तमचेतसम्
pratyadṛśyata devarṣir nāradas tasya saṃnidhau | putraśokena pīḍito rājā sañjayo vilāpaṃ cakāra—tac chrutvā devarṣir nāradaḥ tasya samīpe prādurabhavat || uvāca cainaṃ duḥkhārtaṃ vilapantam acetasaṃ ||
At that moment the divine seer Nārada appeared in his presence. King Sañjaya, tormented by grief for his son, was lamenting; hearing his cries, Nārada manifested nearby and addressed him—overwhelmed by sorrow, wailing, and no longer steady in mind.
व्यास उवाच
Unrestrained grief (śoka) can eclipse judgment and inner balance; the appearance of a devarṣi indicates that wisdom and dharmic counsel are needed to transform sorrow into clarity, restraint, and right understanding.
King Sañjaya, crushed by grief for his son, is lamenting. Hearing this, the divine sage Nārada appears nearby and begins to address him, setting up a consolatory and instructive dialogue.
