Sañjaya said: Praising the eternal Brahman and worshipping Śarva (Śiva), he sought the deity’s favor. The Blessed Lord, compassionate to devotees, then showed him mercy. Meanwhile, the warriors—having arrayed their forces in battle formation and intent on striking—charged forward, striving to enter the formation and accomplish their aim.

Educational Q&A

The verse juxtaposes battlefield aggression with devotional surrender: even amid violent human planning, the epic portrays divine compassion responding to sincere worship. Ethically, it highlights how spiritual power and moral intention can be invoked within war—raising the question of how divine favor intersects with dharma when the immediate context is harm and tactical advantage.

Sañjaya reports that a combatant worships Śiva, praising him as the eternal Brahman, and receives the Lord’s mercy. At the same time, armed warriors—arrayed in formation—rush forward, intent on entering the battle-array and carrying out their attack.
