Educational Q&A

The verse links ethical kingship to spiritual merit: steadfast truthfulness and dharma, mastery over the senses, and reverence toward learned brāhmaṇas are presented as virtues that naturally lead to svarga—heaven is depicted as the moral consequence of character.

Sañjaya, narrating events to Dhṛtarāṣṭra, pauses to characterize Yudhiṣṭhira’s moral stature. By praising his truth, restraint, and reverence for brāhmaṇas, Sañjaya frames Yudhiṣṭhira as inherently righteous—someone whose conduct is worthy of heaven even amid the turmoil of the war.
