Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: “When Yudhiṣṭhira fell into the ruinous addiction of gambling, he was indeed made to suffer grievously. Yet, by the turn of fortune, he has again obtained many allies.”
धृतराष्ट उवाच
The verse highlights the ethical and political consequences of a ruler’s vice: gambling brings suffering and destabilization, yet outcomes in human affairs also turn on fortune; therefore one should avoid destructive addictions while recognizing the unpredictable role of destiny in restoring strength and alliances.
Dhṛtarāṣṭra reflects that Yudhiṣṭhira was driven into misery through the gambling calamity, but despite that setback Yudhiṣṭhira has, by a turn of fortune, regained supporters—implying renewed power and a growing threat to the Kauravas.
