रुद्रमीशानवृषभं हरं शम्भुं कपर्दिनम् | चेकितानं परां योनिं तिषछततो गच्छतश्ष ह,वे “रु अर्थात् दुःखको दूर करनेके कारण रुद्र कहलाते हैं। ब्रह्मा आदि लोकपालोंमें सबसे श्रेष्ठ हैं। पापहारी, कल्याणकी प्राप्ति करानेवाले तथा जटाजूटधारी हैं। वे ही सबको चेतना प्रदान करते हैं और वे ही स्थावर-जंगम प्राणियोंके परम कारण हैं
rudram īśāna-vṛṣabhaṃ haraṃ śambhuṃ kapardinam | cekitānaṃ parāṃ yoniṃ tiṣṭhataḥ gacchataś ca ha ||
Vyāsa said: “(I praise) Rudra—Īśāna, the Bull-bannered Lord; Hara, Śambhu, the matted-haired one. He is the awakener of all consciousness and the supreme source-cause of beings, whether moving or unmoving. By removing suffering he is called ‘Rudra’; among Brahmā and the world-guardians he is the foremost, the remover of sin, and the bestower of auspicious good.”
