sañjaya uvāca | dravamāṇaṃ tu tat sainyaṃ dṛṣṭvā vigatacetanaṃ | madhyasthatāṃ ca pārthasya dharmaputro 'bravīd idam ||
Sañjaya said: Seeing that army fleeing in panic, as if bereft of sense, and noticing Pārtha (Arjuna), the son of Pāṇḍu, standing aloof and neutral, Dharmaputra (Yudhiṣṭhira) spoke these words.

In a moment of battlefield collapse, the verse highlights the ethical burden of leadership: when troops lose courage and order breaks down, a principal warrior’s neutrality becomes a moral and strategic issue, prompting Dharmaputra to intervene through counsel or command.
Sañjaya reports that the army is fleeing in confusion, and Arjuna is standing aside in a neutral posture; seeing this, Yudhiṣṭhira begins to speak, setting up the next lines of dialogue and decision-making.
