वयं क्षमयितारश्न किमन्यत्र शमाद् भवेत् । “सब धर्मोंके ज्ञाता शिनिप्रवर! इस प्रकार मित्रधर्मका विचार करके आप धूृष्टद्युम्नकी ओरसे अपने क्रोधको रोकें और शान्त हो जाय, आप धृष्टद्युम्नके और धृष्टद्युम्न आपके अपराधको क्षमा कर लें। हमलोग केवल क्षमा-प्रार्थना करनेवाले हैं; शान्तिसे बढ़कर श्रेष्ठ वस्तु और क्या हो सकती है?”
sañjaya uvāca | vayaṁ kṣamayitāraś ca kim anyatra śamād bhavet |
Sañjaya said: “We are only those who seek forgiveness; what could be better than peace? O best of the Śinis, knowing all dharmas, reflect on the duty of friendship in this way—restrain your anger on account of Dṛṣṭadyumna, become calm, and let each forgive the other’s offense.”
संजय उवाच
The verse elevates śama (calm, pacification) and kṣamā (forgiveness) as the highest practical good, especially amid conflict. It urges restraint of anger and mutual pardon, framing reconciliation as a dharmic choice even in a war setting.
Sanjaya reports a plea for reconciliation: the addressee—praised as foremost among the Śinis and a knower of dharma—is asked to consider the obligations of friendship, restrain anger directed toward Dṛṣṭadyumna, and allow mutual forgiveness of offenses.
