Educational Q&A

The verse highlights intentionality in action: a warrior’s choice to personally pursue a specific adversary (Karṇa) while acknowledging the wider battlefield reality (Bhīma engaged with Droṇa’s host). Ethically, it underscores how vows and personal enmities operate within the larger dharmic strain of war—decisions are purposeful, yet entangled in collective violence.

Sañjaya reports that a warrior declares he will go himself to the battlefield with the aim of killing Karṇa. At the same time, Bhīmasena is described as already locked in combat with the forces under Droṇa, indicating simultaneous fronts and the intensity of the ongoing engagement.
