Drona Parva, Chapter 18: Arjuna’s astra-deployment against the Saṃśaptakas
अथवा हर्षकालो<यं त्रैगर्तानामसंशयम् । कुनरैर्दुरवापान् हि लोकान प्राप्स्यन्त्यनुत्तमान्,“अथवा इसमें संदेह नहीं कि यह इन त्रिगर्तोंके लिये हर्षका ही अवसर है; क्योंकि ये उन परम उत्तम लोकोंमें जायँगे, जो दुष्ट मनुष्योंके लिये दुर्लभ हैं!
athavā harṣa-kālo ’yaṃ traigartānām asaṃśayam | kunaraiḥ duravāpān hi lokān prāpsyanty anuttamān ||
Sañjaya said: “Or else, beyond doubt, this is a time of rejoicing for the Trigartas; for, by meeting death in battle, they will attain the highest worlds—realms that are hard to reach for base and wicked men.”
संजय उवाच
The verse frames death faced in righteous battle as potentially elevating: those who embrace peril with warrior-duty may attain exalted realms, whereas ignoble conduct is portrayed as a barrier to such attainment.
Sañjaya comments on the Trigartas’ situation in the war, suggesting that—even if their undertaking is deadly—it can be a ‘joyous occasion’ for them because falling in battle may lead them to the highest heavenly worlds.
