Chapter 148: Karṇa’s Pressure, Dhṛṣṭadyumna Unhorsed, and the Summoning of Ghaṭotkaca
hataṁ jayadrathaṁ dṛṣṭvā tava putrā narādhipa | duḥkhād aśrūṇi mumucur nirāśāś cābhavan jaye naraśvara ||
Sañjaya said: O king, when your sons saw Jayadratha slain, they wept tears born of grief and became despondent about victory. The fall of their ally shattered their confidence and darkened their hopes in the war.
The verse highlights how attachment to outcomes and reliance on a single ally can collapse morale when circumstances turn. Ethically, it underscores the instability of confidence rooted in power and advantage rather than in dharma and inner steadiness.
Sañjaya reports to King Dhṛtarāṣṭra that, upon seeing Jayadratha slain, the Kauravas are overwhelmed with grief, shed tears, and lose hope of victory—marking a major psychological setback in the battle.
