Sañjaya said: Released from that thunderous din of bowstrings—where maces and swords flashed like lightning, and where Droṇa’s weapon poured down like a rain-cloud—Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna shone forth, as the sun and the moon appear when freed from darkness.

Educational Q&A

Even in the most overwhelming violence of war—depicted as thunder, lightning, and storm-clouds of weapons—steadfastness joined with righteous support can restore clarity and hope. The verse frames Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna as a luminous moral and strategic center emerging from peril, suggesting that dharmic resolve and wise guidance dispel ‘darkness’ in moments of crisis.

Sañjaya describes Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna coming out safely and visibly from the oppressive onslaught associated with Droṇa’s weaponry. The battlefield is imagined as a storm: bowstrings roar like thunder, swords and maces flash like lightning, and Droṇa’s missiles fall like rain-clouds. Having escaped that ‘storm,’ the two appear radiant—likened to the sun and moon emerging from darkness.
