इस प्रकार चलनेवाले उस रोमांचकारी संग्राममें दुर्योधनकी विशाल सेना प्राय: युद्धसे विमुख होकर भाग गयी ।। इति श्रीमहा भारते भीष्मपर्वणि भीष्मवधपर्वणि संकुलयुद्धे त्रिनवतितमो<ध्याय: ।। १३ ।। इस प्रकार श्रीमह्ाभारत भीष्मपर्वके अन्तर्गत भीष्मवधपर्वमें संकुलयुद्धविषयक तिरानबेवाँ अध्याय पूरा हुआ
iti prakāraṃ calanavāle tasmin romāñcakāri saṅgrāme duryodhanasya viśālā senā prāyaḥ yuddhāt vimukhībhūya palāyitā | iti śrīmahābhārate bhīṣmaparvaṇi bhīṣmavadhaparvaṇi saṅkulyuddhe trinavatitamo 'dhyāyaḥ |
Sañjaya said: As the battle surged on in this hair-raising clash, Duryodhana’s vast host—losing heart—turned away from the fight and for the most part fled. Thus ends the ninety-sixth chapter, “The Confused Battle,” in the Bhīṣma Parva of the Mahābhārata, within the section concerning the slaying of Bhīṣma.
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights how fear and loss of resolve can unravel even a large force; numbers alone do not sustain dharma in war—steadfastness, discipline, and leadership do.
Sañjaya reports that amid a chaotic and terrifying melee, Duryodhana’s troops largely lose the will to fight and retreat, marking the close of the chapter describing the confused battle.
