भीष्मशिबिरगमनम् — Duryodhana’s Visit to Bhīṣma’s Camp and the Command Appeal

āyudhāni ca sarveṣāṃ bāhūn api vibhūṣitān | apatanta nikṛttāṅgā mṛtā bhūmau gatāsavaḥ ||

Sañjaya said: He hewed down their weapons as well, and even their ornamented arms. With their limbs severed, they fell upon the earth—lifeless and slain—showing the pitiless momentum of battle where prowess turns bodies and finery alike into ruin.

Educational Q&A

The verse underscores the stark impermanence of bodily strength and external adornment in war: weapons and ornamented limbs alike are reduced to nothing. Ethically, it highlights the grave cost of kṣatriya conflict—valor and duty unfold amid irreversible destruction.

Sañjaya describes a warrior’s devastating assault: he cuts down the opponents’ weapons and even their decorated arms. Maimed and lifeless, they collapse onto the earth, emphasizing the intensity and brutality of the ongoing battle.
