भीष्मपर्व — अध्याय ७२: सैन्यगुणवर्णनम्, व्यूहरक्षा, दैव-पुरुषकारचिन्ता
ततो द्रोणश्र भीष्मश्ष तथा शल्यश्ल मारिष | भीमसेन रणे क्रुद्धाश्छादयांचक्रिरे शरै:,आर्य! तदनन्तर द्रोणाचार्य, भीष्म तथा शल्य तीनोंने कुपित होकर भीमसेनको युद्धस्थलमें अपने बाणोंसे ढक दिया
tato droṇaś ca bhīṣmaś ca tathā śalyaś ca māriṣa | bhīmasenaṁ raṇe kruddhāś chādayāṁ cakrire śaraiḥ ||
Sañjaya said: Then, O noble one, Droṇa, Bhīṣma, and Śalya—angered in the thick of battle—covered Bhīmasena with a shower of arrows.
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights the battlefield tension between dharma as duty (fighting as required by one’s role) and the rise of krodha (anger), showing how even revered elders can be swept into intense violence when confronting a powerful adversary.
Sañjaya reports that Droṇa, Bhīṣma, and Śalya, becoming angry during the fight, collectively target Bhīma and overwhelm him by raining arrows upon him.
