Educational Q&A

Even in war, duty includes solidarity and protection of one’s commander and elders; the warriors’ united rush to aid Bhīṣma highlights loyalty and the kṣatriya ethic of not abandoning a vulnerable leader.

Bhīṣma has become chariotless in the fighting. Seeing this, Śalya and other leading mahārathas advance together with their chariots to reach him quickly—implicitly to shield him, recover him, or re-establish his fighting position.
