Garuḍa Array and the Ardhacandra Counter-Formation
नुदन् समन्तात् समरे रविरुद्यन् यथा तमः । तेनाजौ प्रेषिता राजन् शरा: शतसहस्रश:,जिघांसन्तं युधां श्रेष्ठ तदा55सीत् तुमुलं महत् । संजय कहते हैं--राजन्! पाण्डवपक्षके लाखों क्षत्रियशिरोमणि महारथी विराट सेनापति शूरवीर श्वेतको आगे करके आपके पुत्र दुर्योधनको अपना बल दिखाते हुए शिखण्डीको सामने रखकर भीष्मके सुवर्णभूषित रथपर चढ़ आये। भारत! वे महारथी श्लेतकी रक्षा करना चाहते थे। इसलिये उसे मारनेकी इच्छावाले योद्धाओंमें श्रेष्ठ भीष्मपर उन्होंने धावा किया। उस समय बड़ा भयंकर युद्ध छिड़ गया जैसे सूर्य उदित होकर अन्धकारको नष्ट कर देते हैं, उसी प्रकार वे सब ओर समरभूमिमें शत्रु-सेनाओंका संहार कर रहे थे। राजन! उनके द्वारा चलाये हुए महान् वेग और बलसे सम्पन्न तथा क्षत्रियोंका विनाश करनेवाले लाखों बाणोंने रणभूमिमें सैकड़ों श्रेष्ठ वीरोंके मस्तक काट गिराये
nudan samantāt samare ravir udyan yathā tamaḥ | tenājau preṣitā rājan śarāḥ śata-sahasraśaḥ | jighāṃsantaṃ yudhāṃ śreṣṭha tadā āsīt tumulaṃ mahat ||
Sañjaya said: O King, as the rising sun drives away darkness, so they pressed on from every side in battle, scattering the enemy host. Then hundreds of thousands of arrows were loosed across the field. When they charged against Bhīṣma—the foremost of warriors—intent on slaying him, the clash became vast and tumultuous.
