Sañjaya said: “Had Śveta not provided protection, then Bhīṣma—aroused to the utmost fury—would have overwhelmed him with arrows. Then, seeing the grandsire Bhīṣma turned back and checked by Śveta, the situation on the field shifted.”
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights the kṣatriya ethic of protection and the battlefield consequence of failing to guard one’s side: a single defender’s vigilance can prevent catastrophic loss, while uncontrolled wrath (even in a righteous warrior) becomes decisive only when not met by competent resistance.
Sañjaya describes how Bhīṣma, furious and fighting with volleys of arrows, would have destroyed Śveta if Śveta were not effectively protecting; then Sañjaya notes that Bhīṣma (the grandsire) is seen as being turned back/checked by Śveta, indicating a momentary reversal or restraint in Bhīṣma’s advance.
