Sañjaya said: When the mighty archer Śveta was slain by Bhīṣma, the great bowmen—chariot-warriors led by Śikhaṇḍin—began to tremble in fear. Then, O King, Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) and Vārṣṇeya (Kṛṣṇa) gradually drew their forces back from the battlefield; and in that moment both your army and the Pāṇḍavas’ host grew disinclined to continue the fight. It shows how the fall of a single exemplary warrior can shake morale and alter the ethical and strategic temper of an entire war-host.

The episode underscores that dharma in war is not only personal valor but also steadiness of mind and leadership responsibility: the fall of a key warrior can destabilize collective resolve, and commanders must respond with measured strategy rather than panic.
After Bhīṣma kills the powerful warrior Śveta, Śikhaṇḍin and other great chariot-archers tremble. Arjuna and Kṛṣṇa then pull their forces back gradually, and both the Kaurava and Pāṇḍava armies momentarily lose eagerness for battle.
