Garuḍa Array and the Ardhacandra Counter-Formation

Sañjaya said: Then the mighty chariot-warrior Bhīṣma struck the army-commander Bhīmasena with sixty arrows as he advanced to the front. And in that same battle, your father Devavrata (Bhīṣma) also assailed Abhimanyu—showing how, in the relentless ethics of war, even revered elders meet rising heroes with full martial force, bound by duty to their side.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights kshatriya-dharma in its stark form: once battle is joined, even venerable elders like Bhishma must act decisively for their side, meeting formidable opponents without partiality, because duty to one’s pledged cause governs conduct in war.

Bhishma, the great warrior on the Kaurava side, wounds Bhima—described as an army-commander—with sixty arrows as Bhima comes forward. The line also indicates Bhishma’s engagement against Abhimanyu in the same combat sequence.
