Bhīṣma’s unmatched momentum and the assault with Śikhaṇḍin in the lead

vikarṇo vārayāmāsa icchan bhīṣmasya jīvitam |

Sañjaya said: Wishing to preserve Bhīṣma’s life, Vikarṇa restrained the attack. Even as the heroic Nakula was showering many arrows, Vikarṇa—intent on protecting Bhīṣma—checked him, revealing how loyalty and duty to one’s commander can override the immediate impulse to strike in battle.
