Marutta’s Sacrifice and Agni’s Embassy
saṃvarta uvāca mā smaiva tvaṃ punar āgāḥ kathaṃcid bṛhaspatiṃ paridātuṃ marutte | mā tvāṃ thakṣye cakṣuṣā dāruṇena saṃkruddho ’haṃ pāvaka tvaṃ nibodha ||
Saṃvarta said: “Do not ever come here again, on any pretext, to deliver Bṛhaspati to Marutta. Know this well, O Pāvaka (Agni): if you do, then in my anger I will burn you to ashes with my fierce gaze.”
The verse highlights the ethical weight of boundaries and authority: a powerful ascetic asserts a strict prohibition, warning that even divine beings must respect the consequences of violating a clearly stated command.
Saṃvarta addresses Agni directly, forbidding him to return for the purpose of bringing Bṛhaspati to King Marutta, and threatens to destroy Agni with a fierce gaze if the order is disobeyed.
