Kārtavīrya–Samudra Saṃvāda and the Jāmadagnya Precedent (आश्वमेधिक पर्व, अध्याय २९)
स रामप्रतिकूलानि चकार सह बन्धुभि: । आयासं जनयामास रामस्य च महात्मन:
sa rāmapratikūlāni cakāra saha bandhubhiḥ | āyāsaṃ janayāmāsa rāmasya ca mahātmanaḥ ||
Along with his kinsmen, he committed acts hostile to Rāma, and he caused distress and hardship to the great-souled Rāma as well.
समुद्र उवाच
Opposing a righteous, great-souled person through hostile actions—especially in concert with one’s allies—creates real harm and also accrues ethical blame; the verse highlights both the suffering inflicted and the moral responsibility shared by those who participate.
Samudra (the Ocean) states that a certain person, together with his relatives/allies, acted against Rāma and thereby caused Rāma hardship and distress, framing the episode as an instance of antagonism toward a noble figure.
