अध्याय ९ — धृतराष्ट्रस्य युधिष्ठिरं प्रति राजनित्युपदेशः
Dhṛtarāṣṭra’s Counsel on Royal Policy to Yudhiṣṭhira
गुरुर्मतो भवानस्य कृत्स्नस्य जगत: प्रभु:
gurur mato bhavān asya kṛtsnasya jagataḥ prabhuḥ
Vaiśampāyana said: “You are regarded as the guru—indeed the sovereign lord—of this entire world.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse underscores dharmic hierarchy and ethical restraint: one who is acknowledged as a guru and ‘prabhu’ deserves deference, and moral authority is grounded in recognized wisdom and rightful leadership rather than mere power.
In Vaiśampāyana’s narration, a figure is being addressed with high honor, being affirmed as the revered teacher and ruling authority over the whole world—language that frames the listener’s duty to respect and heed that person’s guidance.
