Nārada’s Exempla of Tapas and Assurance to Dhṛtarāṣṭra (नारदोपदेशः—तपःसिद्ध्युदाहरणम्)
ततस्तत्र कथाशक्षासंस्तेषां धर्मार्थलक्षणा: । विचित्रपदसंचारा नानाश्रुतिभिरन्विता:
tatastatra kathāśakṣāsaṃsteṣāṃ dharmārthalakṣaṇāḥ | vicitrapadasaṃcārā nānāśrutibhir anvitāḥ ||
Then, in that place, there arose among them discussions and instructions marked by dharma and artha—discourses moving through varied and artful turns of expression, enriched with many scriptural citations and traditional teachings.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights that proper counsel and conversation should be grounded in dharma (ethical right) and artha (practical welfare), and supported by authoritative tradition (śruti), suggesting that moral life and prudent action are best guided by disciplined, well-sourced instruction.
Vaiśampāyana describes a scene where the group engages in refined, varied discussions—didactic talks and exchanges—whose content concerns dharma and artha and is reinforced with diverse scriptural or traditional references.
