Chatra–Upānah Dāna: Origin Narrative
Jamadagni–Reṇukā–Sūrya Saṃvāda
प्रययुस्ते ततो भूयस्तीर्थानि वनगोचरा: । पुण्येषु तीर्थेषु तथा गात्राण्याप्लावयन्त ते,तदनन्तर उन सब लोगोंने वनके मार्गोंसे होते हुए पुनः तीर्थयात्रा आरम्भ की और पुण्यतीर्थोमें जा-जाकर गोते लगाकर स्नान किया
prayayus te tato bhūyas tīrthāni vanagocarāḥ | puṇyeṣu tīrtheṣu tathā gātrāṇy āplāvayanta te ||
Then those forest-dwelling wanderers set out once again for the sacred fords (tīrthas). Going from one holy tīrtha to another, they immersed their bodies in the waters and bathed—renewing themselves through pilgrimage and purification.
अगस्त्य उवाच
The verse highlights tīrtha-yātrā and ritual bathing as acts of purification and renewal. Ethically, it points to disciplined movement toward sacred spaces and practices that cleanse and reorient a person toward dharma.
Agastya describes a group of forest-travelers resuming their pilgrimage. They go from one holy tīrtha to another and immerse themselves in the waters, performing purificatory baths.
