Shloka 37

Puṣkara-Śapatha Itihāsa (Agastya–Indra Dispute at the Tīrthas) | पुष्कर-शपथ-आख्यानम्

गुरूणीति विदित्वाथ न ग्राह्माण्यत्रिरब्रवीत्‌ न स्महे मन्दविज्ञाना न स्महे मन्दबुद्धयः,वे सभी फल भारी हो गये थे, इस बातको महर्षि अत्रि ताड़ गये और बोले--ये “गूलर हमारे लेने योग्य नहीं हैं। हमारी बुद्धि मन्द नहीं हुई है। हमारी ज्ञानशक्ति लुप्त नहीं हुई है। हम सो नहीं रहे हैं, जागते हैं। हमें अच्छी तरह ज्ञात है कि इनके भीतर सुवर्ण भरा पड़ा है। यदि आज हम इन्हें स्वीकार कर लेते हैं तो परलोकमें हमें इनका कटु परिणाम भोगना पड़ेगा। जो इहलोक और परलोकमें भी सुख चाहता हो उसके लिये यह फल अग्राह्म है!

bhīṣma uvāca | gurūṇīti viditvātha na grāhyāṇy atrir abravīt | na smahe mandavijñānā na smahe mandabuddhayaḥ |

Bhishma said: Having understood the proper conduct toward elders and teachers, the sage Atri declared, “These are not to be accepted. We are not of dull discernment, nor are we of dull intellect.” Sensing that the fruits had become unnaturally heavy and knowing the hidden motive behind the gift, he rejected them: even if they appear harmless, accepting what is tainted by greed or deceit brings bitter consequences in the next world. Therefore, one who seeks well-being in both this life and the hereafter should treat such gains as unfit to receive.

Educational Q&A

One should not accept gifts or gains that are ethically tainted, deceptive, or rooted in greed. Even if the object looks harmless, accepting it can produce bitter karmic results; therefore, what is ‘agrāhya’ (unfit) must be refused for the sake of welfare in both this world and the next.

Bhishma recounts that the sage Atri perceives an improper or dangerous offering—fruits that have become unusually heavy, implying hidden gold and a corrupt intent. Atri states that he and his companions are not dull-minded; they understand the situation and therefore refuse to accept the fruits, warning of harmful consequences if such a gift is taken.
