Gopradāna-phalasaṃprāpti: Nāciketa’s Vision of Vaivasvata’s Realms (गोप्रदानफलसम्प्राप्तिः — नाचिकेतोपाख्यानम्)
tasmāt pānīya-dānād vai na paraṁ vidyate kvacit | manīṣī puruṣo 'nne hi manuṣyāṇāṁ prāṇam āha | puruṣa-siṁha! sarva-prakāram annaṁ (khādya-padārthāḥ) jalenaiva utpadyate; ataḥ jala-dānāt baḍhkaraṁ dvitīyaṁ dānaṁ kvāpi na vidyate |
Bhishma declares that no gift surpasses the gift of water. The wise have taught that food itself is the very life of human beings; and since every kind of food arises from water, O best of men, there is no charity greater anywhere than giving water. In this ethical instruction, Bhishma elevates water-donation as a foundational act of dharma because it sustains life at its root.
भीष्म उवाच
The verse teaches that giving water is the highest form of charity because water is the basis of all food and thus directly sustains life; supporting life at its source is presented as supreme dharma.
In Anushasana Parva, Bhishma is instructing Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma and charitable duties; here he emphasizes the ethical priority of pānīya-dāna (donating water) as unmatched among gifts.
