Cyavana’s Water-Vow and the Ethics of Cohabitation (स्नेह-सम्वास-धर्मः)
भरतभूषण नरेश! वैश्यके धनको पाँच भागोंमें विभक्त करना चाहिये। फिर वैश्या और शूद्राके पुत्रोमें उस धनका विभाजन कैसे करना चाहिये, यह बताता हूँ ।। वैश्यापुत्रेण हर्तव्याश्नत्वारों शा: पितुर्धनात् । पञ्चमस्तु स्मृतो भाग: शूद्रापुत्राय भारत,भरतनन्दन! उस पैतृक धनमेंसे चार भाग तो वैश्याके पुत्रको ले लेने चाहिये और पाँचवाँ अंश शूद्राके पुत्रका भाग बताया गया है
bhīṣma uvāca | vaiśyaputreṇa hartavyāś catvāro bhāgāḥ pitur dhanāt | pañcamas tu smṛto bhāgaḥ śūdrāputrāya bhārata ||
Bhīṣma said: “O Bhārata, ornament of the Bharata line! From a Vaiśya father’s wealth, the son born of a Vaiśyā is to take four shares; the fifth share is remembered as belonging to the son born of a Śūdrā. Thus is the division of paternal property stated according to the remembered rule.”
